State tax estimate
Review state tax separately from your federal result.
Choose your state of residence and enter state withholding and payments. SargoTax uses jurisdiction-specific supported rules—never one generic state rate—and shows when a state or local calculation needs more information.
State income does not always equal federal income
States can use different starting points, deductions, exemptions, credits, tax tables, and additions or subtractions. A federal refund does not guarantee a state refund.
SargoTax labels the calculation status. Some full-year resident paths calculate directly, some states have no broad individual income tax for the supported scenario, and complex or incomplete paths stay gated.
City and local taxes need a real location
Local income taxes can depend on residence, work location, locality, wage base, and withholding. SargoTax includes supported New York City and Yonkers resident calculations and permits entered Pennsylvania local tax facts on the supported path.
The app does not assume a city merely from the state selection. This avoids adding the wrong local tax to taxpayers outside that jurisdiction.
Plain-language answers
Common questions
Does every state have an income tax?
No. Several states do not impose a broad individual income tax, though other state or local taxes can still apply.
Does the calculator use one average state rate?
No. SargoTax uses supported jurisdiction-specific logic and leaves unsupported paths unavailable rather than using a generic rate.
Can I calculate more than one state?
The estimator includes a multi-state module for supported facts, but allocation, credits, reciprocity, and nonresident rules may require additional review.
