What the supported California path does

The calculation starts with supported federal adjusted gross income only when the entered facts do not require an uncollected California adjustment. It applies the California standard deduction, official table or rate schedule, and supported personal exemption credit.

The Behavioral Health Services Tax is included when applicable. California withholding and estimated payments are then compared with supported tax to display a preliminary refund or balance due.

When California stays in review

Part-year and nonresident allocation, itemized-deduction reconciliation, dependent-filer worksheets, certain rental losses, California additions and subtractions, AMT, and special credits can require calculations outside the supported path.

The estimator lists these limits and does not guess a California refund when a required state calculation is missing.
