Estimated tax planning

Plan quarterly taxes from a supported annual estimate.

SargoTax creates an annual preliminary result and keeps entered estimated payments visible. Use that result as a planning starting point, then apply the official Form 1040-ES rules and due dates for your situation.

Why estimated payments may be needed

Income without enough withholding can create a balance due. Self-employed taxpayers commonly use estimated tax to pay income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes during the year.

The amount and timing can depend on prior-year tax, current-year income, withholding, uneven income, and special rules. SargoTax does not automatically divide one annual number into four guaranteed payments.

Keep the payment trail complete

Record the date and amount of each federal and state estimated payment. Do not enter a planned payment as though it was already made, because that can overstate the estimated refund.

Recalculate when income changes materially. The IRS notes that taxpayers can complete another Form 1040-ES worksheet when the original annual estimate was too high or too low.

Plain-language answers

Common questions

Does SargoTax send quarterly payments?

No. It helps create an annual estimate and organize payment information; payments must be made through an authorized payment method.

Are quarterly payments always equal?

Not always. Uneven income and other circumstances can change the applicable calculation.

Are state estimated taxes included?

State payments can be entered for supported state estimates, but each state has its own rules and payment system.
